32 Guidelines for Graduate Practicum Students

Procedure for Graduate Students Doing Practicum with NIC Associate’s Degree Nursing Faculty

A. Student submits request to HPN Associate Dean/Director of Nursing:

    1. Provide Syllabus for Practicum.
    2. Learning Objectives.
    3. If student has identified specific faculty member they would like to work with.
    4. Dates and total hours to be completed.

B. Associate Dean/Director will review request as to whether appropriate for setting and able to accommodate.

C. Associate Dean/Director will select faculty member to work with student, taking into consideration student request for faculty as well as learning objectives for experience. Faculty preceptor should be tenured if possible.

D. Associate Dean/Director of Nursing will discuss practicum request with faculty member who may either accept or refuse student.

E. Associate Dean/Director of Nursing will notify student of decision regarding practicum request.

F. It is the responsibility of the practicum student to assure there is a contract in place between their school and the NIC ADN Program. This needs to be in place prior to any practicum hours being        completed.

G. Faculty member and student will design a learning contract containing the following:

  1. Graduate Student Learning Objectives.
  2. Clinical/Classroom/Committee as setting for experience.
  3. Hours and projected schedule for student.
  4. Responsibilities of faculty and student during experience.

H. Evaluation of ADN students is responsibility of NIC faculty and may not be delegated to student. This includes anything that constitutes a grade for the pre-licensure nursing student.
