Division Chairs’ Reassigned Time and Compensation Guideline

Rationale: NIC provides Division Chairs compensation above their regular annual faculty salary in the form of stipends and additional duty days, in addition to providing reassigned time.  Stipends for division chairs serve to support recruitment and retention of Division Chairs.

Reassignment Model:

  • The following factors are used to determine reassigned time for each division chair:
    • # of Faculty in the Division (includes full and part-time)
    • # of Students served (enrollment headcount)
    • # of Programs in the Division
    • Other projects as assigned
  • All Divisions at 12 credits of reassigned time are allowed and encouraged to have an Assistant Division Chair.
  • Chairs with 15 credits of reassigned time, those with less than 12, and co-chairs are not eligible for an Assistant Division Chair.

Stipend Calculation:

  • Total stipend allocated per division is based on the determination of each Division Chair’s reassigned time (see Reassignment Model). Reassigned time is converted to an additional credit load and paid at the current adjunct rate (examples are based on FY 23 – $1000 per credit) as follows.
    • Examples of Chair reassigned time per semester:
      • 12-15 credit reassigned time= 3 credits per year per Division ($3000 stipend)
      • 9 credit reassigned time = 2.25 credits per year per Division ($2250 stipend)
      • 6 credit reassigned time = 1.5 credits per year per Division ($1500 stipend)
  • Total stipend per division is determined in #1, then is adjusted depending on whether there are assistant chairs, and co-chairs sharing leadership responsibilities for the division.
    • Examples below assume 12-15 credits of reassigned time:
      • – DC no Assistant = 100%, 3 credits per year ($3000)
      • – DC and 1 Assistant DC = 80%/20%, 2.4 credits ($2400) for Chair and .6 credit ($600) for Assistant Chair
      • – DC and 2 Assistant DCs = 80%/10%/10%, 2.4 credits ($2400) for Chair and .3 credits ($300) for each Assistant Chair
      • – Co-Chair and no Assistant= 50%/50%, 1.5 credits ($1500 per co-chair) divided evenly
  • To ensure Division Chairs have the necessary time to enable them to perform their administrative duties they may teach no more than 1 overload course per semester (maximum of 4 credits total). These limits may be adjusted by the supervising Dean for short periods of time as circumstances require.
  • Division Chair stipends are paid 50% at the end of each semester (Fall and Spring only)
