Division Chair Additional Duty Days
Division Chairs need additional duty days beyond their regular faculty contract to complete administrative tasks throughout the year. Given the fluid nature of a division chair’s work, however, it does not serve the institution to ask chairs to identify specific work days, other than 5 days prior to the beginning of fall semester.
For the remainder of a division chair’s additional duty days, the administration, recognizing that division chairs need time for personal renewal, requires them to be responsive between Fall and Spring semesters and throughout the summer to address administrative issues that arise.
Therefore, chairs on 191 days contracts will utilize their days as follows (co-chairs will split these days):
- be on campus at least 5 days prior to faculty’s return for the start of Fall semester
- 15 floating duty days to be utilized between Fall and Spring semesters or during the summer either on-campus or at a distance
The remaining floating duty days will be utilized as needed to:
Adjust class schedules and faculty loads by adding and cancelling courses and monitoring waitlists
- Supervises and coordinates the development of curriculum, course offerings, course syllabi, textbook selection, and outcomes and assessment of courses and programs in the division.
- Supervises and coordinates the course offerings throughout the service area including those offered through eLearning, distance education and off-campus dual classes.
Ensure final grades and attendance are reported on time each semester
- Supervises, monitors, and evaluates division faculty and staff as required by college policies and procedures.
Answer student and employee emails and resolve concerns weekly
- Works to promote and maintain communication with college administrators, support staff, directors, coordinators, other chairs, and faculty.
Resolve student course transfer and placement concerns or appoint a contact person in their absence
- Addresses’ student, faculty, and staff issues relating to the division, and informs and/or involves the respective dean as appropriate.
Complete hiring as needed
- Recruits, interviews, and makes recommendations to the appropriate dean for hiring new faculty and staff.
*Some chairs may have additional duty days beyond the aforementioned 191 days. Please consult with your dean for guidance regarding additional duty days specific to your area.
