16 Program Capacity

What is the capacity of the program to increase the enrollment?

With our current facilities, the math department is well-equipped to handle an increase in enrollment.

However, the department has experienced challenges in retaining staff and faculty and in maintaining morale.   Outside stressors have been significant over the last few years:  teaching under Covid, Board of Trustee dysfunction and accreditation issues, and continuing state demands regarding pedagogy and course delivery.  There have also been challenges recruiting qualified staff and faculty.  This is again due in part to the accreditation issue and also to the dramatic increase in the cost of housing in the region.    Throughout these years, department leadership has been strong and supportive.  And those in the department have shown willingness and skill at filling gaps until new qualified hires can be made, including taking on more classes/duties, serving on hiring committees, and training new hires.  But with fewer people to do this work, we are increasingly and more frequently stretched thin, with little energy left for course and professional development.  This becomes worrisome if the outside stressors are not alleviated or if staff/faculty turnover and failed hiring searches continue.

Does the program have a cap on the number of students? If so, please describe/explain.

There is no cap.
