6 Program Goals: provide previous program review or accreditation recommendations and describe the actions/progress taken to meet the recommendations.

  1. Enhance communication with students in the Psychology Pathway through the implementation of new advising software (Aviso).
  2. Provide additional community building opportunities for students in the Psychology Pathway by initiating more social and educational events. Invited speakers will periodically announce potential employment in areas closely related to clinical work, which is the major focus of the majority of students majoring in psychology. In the research class, the instructor will use the course to impart information about the importance of graduate studies in psychology and will provide general advising information regarding graduate studies and transfer options.
  3. Analyze a variety of data regarding student success and behavior that can inform department actions, including:
  • The impact of the Math pathway on time-to-degree and whether a particular math pathway is associated with better outcomes in the GEM 3 statistics course. At this stage, all we have is anecdotal evidence.   Historically, students will go into a psychology track with an interest in clinical work and are reticent to take courses in mathematics.  As such, streamlining the process so they can fulfill the statistics requirement is a plus.
  • Student perceptions of preparedness for 200-level courses based on Introductory Psychology experience.
  1. Enrich the student learning outcomes assessment of our program goals by identifying Psychology students in the Behavioral Research course in order to gather outcomes data specific to students in our degree field.

Actions/progress taken to meet 2019 review recommendations:

  • Advising software is developed and available for all faculty to communicate with their advisees
  • A new statistics course, Math 153 statistical reasoning, has been developed and added to assist students in completing their psychology emphasis pathway.

Data gathered before covid indicated they felt prepared for the 200 level courses after completing 101 here at NIC.  Students transferring in with psychology 100 from other institutions were too few to assess.
